Description
The great cormorant is entirely black except a white and yellow chin. It has a small white patch on each thigh. It has a grey bill and grey feet and legs. Juvenile is brown above and white below.
Length: 70 to 102 cm.
Wingspan: 121 to 160 cm.
Weight: 1.5 kg to 5.3 kg.
Food habit: Mainly fish, also crustaceans, aquatic insects and frogs.
Habitat: They are seen mainly at large inland water, sand banks, tidal lagoons etc. They hunt fish by diving and chasing the fish under water. They occur single or in small flocks.
Reproduction behavior: September to February is the breeding season. Female lay 3-5 pale blue egg which is overlayed with white chalky layer. Male and female both share the domestic chores.
Distribution: Resident and migratory found throughout India up to over 3000 meter.
