Description
It’s a golden-backed woodpecker with black throat and rump and four toes. It has whitish head with black nape. Whitish underparts with dark chevron markings. Adult male has red crown and crest. Female has white spotted black forecrown. It has characteristic rattling whinnying call and undulating flight.
It forges from ground to canopy feeding on insects specially beetle larvae from under the bark. It also eats fallen fruits and food scraps.
It’s endemic to Indian Subcontinent, Sri lanka.
