Cattle egrets are smaller than many of their cousins. They have relatively short legs and a short thick neck. In breeding season they are white with a yellow bill and legs. Also they get golden plumes on head, chest and back. Legs and bill become black in non-breeding season. Juveniles have dark legs and bill.
They mainly feed on insects and other small animals in grassy fields. Upland areas, farms, marshes are their usual feeding grounds. They build their nests in trees and shrubs.
